Today's news
Teddy Roosevelt
I, for one, am excited about the coming election. It's no surprise to most readers that I am unimpressed with the current administration. To me, the election comes down to one question. Can Roosevelt and the Bull Moose party really get it done? Today's paper seems promising mentioning prominently that the Roosevelt/Johnson ticket is a juggernaut that should race to an election victory over the likes of Woodrow Wilson and President Taft. The first Roosevelt presidency was quite a time for America, and I can't be the only one dreaming of another Roosevelt administration. Still, I am skeptical. For one, I do wonder if Taft, a wholly unimpressive president, but one whom has his supporters, might sponge off enough of the vote from Teddy to aid a Wilson victory. As for Wilson, I'm not sure what to think of him. To be frank, I'm not sure a guy like Wilson is right for our country. It's like today's story mentioning that Mr. Wilson carries around a lucky walnut in his pocket. This country needs a real man in office like Teddy Roosevelt, not some Ivy League President who believes in such superstitious mumbo jumbo.
In other election news, it appears as if the final days of Vice President James S. Sherman are upon this. I may not be a big fan of the Taft administration, but this is certainly sad news. Fare thee well, Mr. Sherman. I do wonder what this will mean for Taft's campaign. It's never good to lose a Vice President, but it's even worse to lose him a few days before the election. The hits just keep coming for President Taft.
Another news of the moment that has me on the edge of my proverbial seat is the war occurring in the Balkans between the combine forced of Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, and Montenegro against the Ottomans Turks. I am, of course, cheering for the success of the Balkan forces against the oppressive Turks, but I do wonder if it's possible for the combined Balkan forces to really get defeat the Ottomans. Pluck and fighting the good fight is one thing, but it can only do so much against the strength in forces and technology that the Turks have. With reports that the Turks have defeated the Bulgarians at Lule Burgas, I am wondering if the tide is not turning towards the Turks, which would be bad news indeed for the good guys.
In less serious news, I'm really excited about that old sport of college football this weekend. The Princeton-Harvard tilt will certainly be one to see, or read about, for most of the country. I fully believe that this battle of two unbeaten monoliths will decide who will become the national champion on the year. According to what I read here, many people, perhaps swept up by their love for Woodrow Wilson, are picking Princeton to win this and march onto the national title, but I have to wonder if they aren't being foolish. Harvard's defense was able to shut down the scrub team playing the part of the Princeton offense in practice, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's more of the same on game day! Either way, that's a good game and I envy those who are able to see it live.
The remaining tilt of games is looking anything but promising with Lehigh attempting to stop Pop Warner's boys up at Carlisle, Virginia trying to keep it close against undefeated Vanderbilt, and Penn and Penn State meeting up, and local boys Georgetown travel to Richmond to meet North Carolina, among other games. If it wasn't for Princeton-Harvard, it's not even worth opening the paper for this week's slate of games, let alone waiting outside the newspaper office, hoping to hear the latest results.
The chairman of the National Baseball commission proposed eliminating the World Series and increasing the season to 176 games in hopes of making more baseball teams profitable. It seems we are in for a fight on our hands, as the players are sure to oppose such a measure. Will the players and ownership ever get along? Still, who can blame the players? This measure would mean less money for them and less excitement for the fans. And for what? Inferior teams can be profitable? I'm sorry, but if your team isn't good enough to win constantly, maybe it would be better to fold and let the real teams duke it out on the field of battle. The Red Sox-Giants World Series was one to remember, and would certainly be more exciting than ending the season with the Red Sox facing off against the last place New York Highlanders and the Giants facing the Cardinals to decide just who the best team in baseball is. Let the two best teams settle it on the field.
Finally, I see an ad here for some kind of snake oil. It starts off promising enough telling me, the reader, not to believe in such superstitious rubbish to cure sore throats, but goes on to trying to sell some kind of snake oil. I will wrap my neck with some raw meat and like it, thank you very much!
See you tomorrow with the news of today!
